如今长江丰水时也仅能通航六千吨铁驳船，即便有万吨货运船要运货进入长江只能由驳船组成船队转运。

长江口自然水深仅6米，70年代后靠人工整维持在7米，98年后经一期整治达8.5米，2004年二期工程完成后，水深才达到10米。芜湖江段航道直到2005年水深才由4.5米达到6.5米。 蒙西到华中煤运铁路，北起内蒙古浩勒报吉站，终点到达江西省吉安市，线路全长1837公里，规划设计输送能力为2亿吨/年，跨越蒙、陕、晋、豫、鄂、湘、赣七省区，估计的投资总额约1930亿元，建成后将成为国内规模最大的运煤专线，于2012年开工建设，2019年建成通车。

2007年第一次踏勘线路时候就曾经是经规划在新港的江洲长江铁路公路桥，到新港后分一路支线到金鸡坡储运，后来不知何故2009年撤销了江洲长江铁路公路桥规划，于是改走咸宁-修水-铜鼓-新余，...
没曾想到2019年通车时才知道线路已经是荆门-岳阳-高安-新余，如今该专线又沿着吉永泉铁路将煤运到了福建境内。
