1976年7月28日3时42分53.8秒，中国河北省唐山丰南一带（东经118.2°，北纬39.6°）发生了强度里氏7.8级（矩震级7.5级）地震，震中烈度11度，震源深度12千米，地震持续约23秒。地震造成242769人死亡，164851人重伤， 位列20世纪世界地震史死亡人数第二，仅次于海原地震。

5·12汶川地震，发生于北京时间（UTC+8）2008年5月12日（星期一）14时28分04秒，根据中华人民共和国地震局的数据，此次地震的面波震级 里氏震级达8.0Ms、矩震级达8.3Mw（根据美国地质调查局的数据，矩震级为7.9Mw），地震烈度达到11度。此次地震的地震波已确认共环绕了地球6圈 。地震波及大半个中国及亚洲多个国家和地区，北至辽宁，东至上海，南至香港、澳门、泰国、越南，西至巴基斯坦均有震感。
5·12汶川地震严重破坏地区超过10万平方千米，其中，极重灾区共10个县（市），较重灾区共41个县（市），一般灾区共186个县（市）。截至2008年9月18日12时，5·12汶川地震共造成69227人死亡，374643人受伤，17923人失踪，是中华人民共和国成立以来破坏力最大的地震，也是唐山大地震后伤亡最严重的一次地震。
经国务院批准，自2009年起，每年5月12日为全国“防灾减灾日”。 2009年我在四川广元，有一回一晚上发生三次5级以上的地震，我朋友被吓得不敢睡觉。 只有经历过地震的人才能真正地理解地震的可怕！2008年的汶川地震，我当时正在上网，西安一网友突然跟我说发生地震了，说他们的网吧震动很厉害，于是我立刻上网页搜寻，正在此时，成都读研究生的儿时玩伴也说地震了，要带着电脑撤离，我单位一位同事说准备回四川内江... ...
等搜寻的网页彻底打开，映入我脑中的便是四川汶川发生了7.8级地震，震中在映秀镇，我清楚地记得当时的时间为2008年5月12日14:32，西安一个正在施工的工地塔吊断裂，于是我告诉了西安网友，，半小时后，成都的儿时玩伴上线了，说撤离时候笔记本的电源适配器在教室里没带出来，一个小时以后，地震级别修正为8.0级。
2009年的7月底，我终于到了四川的广元，一晚上的三次地震也就是那时经历的，汶川地震，我朋友家的三楼住房产生了十二条裂缝，门框严重变形，最宽裂缝可以伸进我的脚，2011年10月他才搬离那有裂缝的住房进入了灾后重建的能抵抗八级以上楼高46层楼房，他家在四楼。2013年11月，我再一次到了广元。
2016年4月26日-29日，我第四次到广元，体验了灾后重建的感受。
我的朋友在汶川地震发生时候，正在上厕所，震后被困在厕所里出不来，门框严重移位，门被卡死了。他撞烂玻璃挤出来，来不及回家、回到病房，找到了15位被困的住院病人，并设法将他们全部带到安置地点---地震棚中。
